The program is divided into six intensive semesters.
Semester One
The art of visual storytelling
An in-depth introduction to 16mm film and digital production. Introductory courses include Film Directing, Cinematography, Screenwriting, and Editing. Each student writes, directs, and edits seven film and digital projects.
Semester Two
Core liberal arts and sciences
Selection of foundational courses in Arts and Humanities, and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Course offerings include Classics, Literature, Renaissance Art and Architecture, Economics, Psychology, and Physics. Courses emphasize critical thinking and college-level writing skills.
Semester Three
Intermediate Film Production
Students advance their craft skills and develop their artistic voices through the production of their own short films. Intermediate classes in Directing, Cinematography, Producing, Screenwriting and Editing prepare students for their productions shot on HD or 16mm or 35mm film.
Semester Four
Intermediate liberal studies
Students choose from a range of upper level courses in subjects including Shakespeare, Semiotics, Anthropology, Politics, and Environmental Studies. Courses emphasize research and the synthesis and analysis of diverse sources of information.
Semester Five
Advanced Film Production
Students develop their professional production skills in advanced film projects including commercials and music videos. In cinematography, students work with RED One Cameras as well as Super-16mm and Panavision 35 mm cameras. Production equipment includes professional lighting, dollies and sound gear. Critical studies and aesthetics courses provide students with the theoretical component that informs their productions.
Semester Six
Thesis Film Production
The primary focus of the final semester is the development, production, and completion of a thesis film project. The semester includes a continuation of advanced producing classes that prepare students for their thesis projects and beyond. In addition to a thesis film project, each student is required to complete a full-length feature screenplay.
